The Shop That Must Not Be Named | York’s Premier Wizard Gift Shop on The Shambles

Explore a Magical Collection of Harry Potter Gifts & Collectables. From wands and jewellery to toys, apparel, homeware, and limited-edition items.

The Story

The Shop That Must Not Be Named is a beloved independent gift shop on York’s historic Shambles, dedicated entirely to officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise. Since opening in May 2017 by Adam Rodway, the shop has welcomed witches, wizards, and Muggles from around the world, offering a magical retail experience inspired by the Wizarding World.

Originally part of the product range at our sister shop “…give the dog a bone,” the collection grew so vast that it deserved a home of its own. Today, fans explore shelves filled with wands, sweets, jewellery, apparel, collectables, and delightful novelties—all curated for Harry Potter enthusiasts of every age. Whether visiting in person or shopping online, guests discover an enchanting space widely believed to resemble the Diagon Alley atmosphere from the films.

Today, the shop welcomes visitors from Asia, America, New Zealand, and beyond – including school trips, families, and dedicated fans who arrive dressed in flowing robes, clutching wands, and ready to immerse themselves in the wizarding world

A Magical Experience from the Moment You Arrive

Even before you step inside, the magic begins. Outside the shop, you’ll find brooms parked against the wall – a playful invitation to “park your broom” before entering. The window displays are packed with enchanting wares, and the queue of excited fans snaking down the cobbled street is a testament to the shop’s enduring popularity.

Once inside, you’ll discover a treasure trove spread across two connected buildings. Every inch of the space has been carefully designed with Potter fans in mind: floating candles drift overhead, post owls deliver letters from the ceiling, and chandeliers cast a warm, magical glow. Look closely and you might spot a Howler waiting to be opened, or a “Have You Seen This Wizard?” poster pinned to the wall.

The staff – dressed in full Hogwarts attire – are not just employees; they are fellow Potterheads who stay “in character” throughout your visit, referring to “Muggle technology” and happily quizzing you on your wizarding knowledge. Whether you need help choosing a wand or want to debate which house has the best common room, they’re there to guide you.

What Customers Say

With a 4.5/5 rating from over 1,200 Google reviews and consistently excellent feedback across Tripadvisor and other platforms, the shop has earned its reputation as a must‑visit destination [9†L7-L8].

“This was the sole reason I visited York over the weekend – to walk down the Shambles to this shop. From the window displays to the ‘park your brooms’ stand outside and all the Harry Potter merchandise and Fantastic Beasts merchandise, it’s a really good shop for fans. Will definitely be visiting again next time I’m in York.”
— Google reviewer, 4/5

“We love this Harry Potter shop! It feels very magical and a perfect fit for such a shop. We are annual attendees of the London Warner Bros Studio Tour and yet there is something special about this little shop (though it is bigger than we thought!). The staff are so so friendly here and it was a delight to shop in.”
— Google reviewer, 5/5

“What an absolute gem of a shop on the Shambles. I wanted to go to York for this shop alone. It did not disappoint. We bought some reusable House coffee mugs and enjoyed the decor and items available. Luckily they ship!”
— Google reviewer, 5/5

“As a huge Harry Potter fan, I knew I couldn’t miss a visit to The Shop That Must Not Be Named during my trip to York. From the moment I entered, I was whisked away to the magical world of Hogwarts. The shop was filled with amazing Harry Potter‑themed merchandise, from clothing to collectibles and accessories. I was impressed by the quality of the products – everything was carefully crafted and of high quality.”
— Tripadvisor reviewer, 5/5

“The staff went above and beyond for our son. When a member of staff found his lost teddy, they contacted us and, when we couldn’t collect it, sent it back to him. I cannot thank you all enough.”

FAQs

Do I need to book to visit?

No – the shop operates on a walk‑in basis. However, during busy periods (weekends, school holidays, summer), there may be a queue. Arriving early – around opening time – is the best way to avoid long waits.

How long should I allow for my visit?

Most visitors spend 30–60 minutes browsing, though dedicated fans have been known to stay for over an hour. With two buildings full of merchandise, you’ll want to leave plenty of time to explore properly.

Is the merchandise officially licensed?

Yes. The Shop That Must Not Be Named is the only shop on the Shambles that specialises in officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise. The quality is notably higher than the unofficial souvenir shops nearby, and prices reflect that.

Is the shop suitable for young children?

Absolutely. Children will be captivated by the magical displays, the plush toys, the sweets, and the friendly staff. Many families visit as part of a day out in York, and the shop is a highlight for young witches and wizards.

What’s the difference between the main shop and “the little shop”?

The main shop at 30-31 Shambles carries the full range of merchandise. The smaller sister shop located opposite specialises in clothing, particularly robes and apparel.
