Society of Alchemists | York’s Most Magical Shopping Experience on The Shambles

Alchemy gifts, zodiac finds, mystical fragrances, and home rituals. Celestial accessories, artisan curiosities, and magical lifestyle items.

The Story

Tucked away at 18 The Shambles in York, the Society of Alchemists is not merely a shop – it is a theatrical experience, a fantasy world brought to life, and a sensory journey unlike any other on this historic street. This is the original, first‑ever Society of Alchemists shop, opened in November 2022 by Marcus Doyle and Warren Booth, the successful entrepreneurs behind the Yorkshire Soap Company and The Imaginarium. A second location has since opened in Halifax’s iconic Piece Hall.

The duo was inspired by 1980s fantasy films such as The Never Ending StoryLabyrinth, and The Dark Crystal – and they have poured a quarter of a million pounds into creating this fully immersive brand. Their goal was simple: “We didn’t want to go down the Harry Potter route, but we wanted the shop to have a feel of magic. We wanted to create our own sense of theatre.”

From the moment you approach, you are stepping into a fictional world: a clandestine group of ancient alchemists, travelling across worlds in search of eternal life, transforming the mundane into magic. This rich narrative is woven into every corner of the store, visiting here feel like uncovering a hidden sanctuary filled with long‑kept secrets.

What They Offer

The Dragon Ouroboros – The Keeper of Secrets

The undisputed heart of the Society of Alchemists is Ouroboros – a magnificent, two‑and‑a‑half‑metre‑long animated dragon that greets you as you enter. Crafted by a specialist company in Halifax, Ouroboros is not a static statue. He moves, he watches, and he is the fiercely protective guardian of the crypt of the Unknown Alchemist. The name Ouroboros – the ancient symbol of a serpent or dragon eating its own tail – represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, a theme that runs throughout the alchemist’s story. Surrounded by crystals and long‑crafted treasures, he is the perfect photo opportunity and a mesmerising centrepiece that captivates visitors of all ages.

“As you walk into the shop you will be greeted by the famous Society dragon which gives you a nod as you walk in … I was in awe, it really was all very magical.” — Yorkshire Post

The Story – A Clandestine Society of Ancient Alchemists

“A clandestine group of ancient Alchemists who travel this world and others in search of eternal life, creating magic from the miscellanea that surrounds us. They specialise in the never‑ending exploration in transforming the mundane into magic, offering a selection of bathing elixirs, body embalmers and enchanting curio in a range of evocative fragrances and beautiful designs.”

This backstory is not just marketing – it is the soul of the shop. The alchemists have discovered fonts of power, built lairs, and hidden secrets within these walls. Their symbol, the Ouroboros, represents the cycle of life, death, and re‑incarnation – to be transformed, to be infinite, to be immortal. Every product, every scent, every display is designed to extend that narrative.

“Long kept secrets are hidden within this mysterious sanctuary and buried in his tomb the grand Alchemist is guarded by the great dragon Ouroboros. Be careful not to wake him, as he will protect his master fiercely and for all eternity.”
