A Building Steeped in History – 12 The Shambles

Part of the magic of visiting the York Vikings is the building itself. Number 12 The Shambles is a Grade II-listed building with a fascinating history that spans over 600 years.

  • 1400 – A building was first constructed on the site, probably T-shaped and set a little off the street.
  • Late 15th century – A new three‑storey building was constructed in front of the existing house.
  • Early 18th century – The building was refronted in brick, removing the jettying (overhang) of the timber‑framed structure.
  • 1954 – The building was Grade II* listed, recognising its exceptional architectural and historical interest.
  • As of 2020 – The building is occupied by York Vikings on the ground floor, with Guest Walker & Co. solicitors on the upper floors at 12A.

What Our Customers Say

“I was looking to buy ornamental Dragons, and found this was the perfect place. Some really cool looking Goblets too. Polite helpful staff on the day also makes this place worth revisiting again and again.”
— Dungeon Crawler G., Google (5/5)

“A great little gift shop for any viking lover. I actually found a lot of useful information out from the shop and purchased several gifts for friends here. I also got a lovely little glass gift for my mom, that had an etching of a viking ship inside! Superb gift shop!”
— Bethanie C., Google (5/5)

“Just bought this fantastic sword! A bit pricey, but it’s a hefty chunk of metal. Some other really interesting items in the shop too, from drinking vessels to clothing to ornaments and jewellery. If the Norse aesthetic is your thing, well worth a visit.”
— Google reviewer (5/5)

“Being on The Shambles means the building itself is worth a look inside regardless of what they’re selling, but truth be told it is a nice looking shop and it does have some cool gifts for people to take back home. The store keeper was very nice to me as well.”
— Jonathan M., Google (4/5)
