The Story
The Shop That Must Not Be Named is a beloved independent gift shop on York’s historic Shambles, dedicated entirely to officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise. Since opening in May 2017, the shop has welcomed witches, wizards, and Muggles from around the world, offering a magical retail experience inspired by the Wizarding World.
Originally part of the product range at our sister shop “…give the dog a bone,” the collection grew so vast that it deserved a home of its own. Today, fans explore shelves filled with wands, sweets, jewellery, apparel, collectables, and delightful novelties—all curated for Harry Potter enthusiasts of every age. Whether visiting in person or shopping online, guests discover an enchanting space widely believed to resemble the Diagon Alley atmosphere from the films.
